“We have much more to give,” says Glanmire’s Louise Scannell
Ambassador UCC Glanmire opened their Super League campaign with a home win over Pyrobel Killester 77-62 at the Mardyke Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Irish U-18 International, and one of the stars of this summer’s European Championship run to the Final, Louise Scannell told us, “I thought at the start of the game we lacked our usual intensity on the defensive end which let them get easy back door layups and second chance opportunities, as the game progressed we started to play our own game.”
“I think personally we were only in gear 7 and I think there's still so much more there to show.”
Head Coach Mark Scannell told basketballireland.ie “We’re very happy," he said. "We started slowly, we gave them 38 points in the first half and that’s not like us defensively. When we keep teams in the 60s we generally win games."
Louise scored 13 points in the win but was more focused on her overall performance, “Yeah scoring 13 points in the first game of season for me I suppose wasn't anything to get too excited about. Mark (Scannell) puts me in to do a job and I suppose really I just focus mainly on that.”
It’s a difficult situation for Louise, with being the niece of the Head Coach but she says she can handle that pressure and is full of praise for him, “For me, playing under my uncle Mark has a small bit of pressure but he has full confidence in me and my ability when I go out on the court so that's something I reassure myself about. I enjoy being coached immensely by him, he knows what's best and what's not. I learned so much from him being my coach over the last few years and he's one of the people who got me to play at this level of basketball.”
As for the ambitions for the season ahead Louise said, “My ambitions for the season would be to of course win the cup but that's a long while off yet so still plenty of work to be put in.”
