This weekend’s Super League review

After this weekend’s action UCD Marian are the only unbeaten team in the Men’s Super League, while there’s a 4-way tie at the top of the Women’s Super League as WIT Wildcats, UCC Glanmire, SuperValu Brunell and last season’s Champions Liffey Celtics are 2 from 2.

Marian had little trouble dispatching winless Maree 86-49 with Conor Meany top-scoring with 16 points. Griffith College Swords Thunder stay top of the table having played a game more and they had a very comfortable 93-48 win over a very young KUBS side.

Black Amber Templeogue got a much-needed win at Oblate Hall when they beat UCC Demons in an overtime thriller.

Lawrence ‘Puff’ Summers and Jason Killeen were vital in the reigning champions victory, with the pair netting 46 points between them.

Templeogue Head Coach Mark Keenan said afterwards, “It’s a big relief off the shoulders to get a win after the last few weeks. Fair play to the lads, we stuck more together tonight and came through it, so delighted to get back to winning ways.”

Despite scoring 33 points Ryan Oliver found himself on the losing side as Belfast Star lost out to Pyrobel Killester with a basket right at the end. 23 points from reigning MVP Trae Pemberton and 18 from Kieran Donaghy helped Garvey’s Tralee Warriors (pictured above in Tralee)beat DCU Saints, while SSE Airtricity Moycullen won a very entertaining tussle with Éanna 86-77, after 33 points from American Brandon McGuire.

In the Women’s Super League Ambassador UCC Glanmire were made work extremely hard for their win over IT Carlow on Sunday. Victory Scholar Maeve Parahus scored 33 points in a losing battle, as Glanmire had scorers all over with Claire Rockall (19), Grainne Dwyer (18) and Alexis Eckles (18) helping them to victory as they managed to open up a gap in the last quarter to run out 15-point winners in the end.

Singleton SuperValu Brunell and NUIG Mystics left it down to the dying seconds to decide a winner, with Brunell just bagging victory by a point, 72-71. Breanna Bey kept up her hot scoring streak bagging 27 points. Kiera Gaines top-scored for the Mystics with 25.

Mark Ingle’s DCU Mercy, who only played their opening game, kicked off their season in style with a hard-fought win over Pyrobel Killester. A 66-57 win, with Alex Masaquel grabbing 21 points.

Ingle said, “Killester are a good side, they were physical, but I thought our defence was pretty good. We got a bit of a run on them in the second half and then we let them back into the game with a couple of careless turnovers but I think that’s more to do with the fact that it was our first game.”

Elsewhere, the Portlaoise Panthers has a tough weekend, with back-to-back losses to WIT Wildcats (46-79) and last season’s Champions Courtyard Liffey Celtics (55-65). Panthers Stephanie Schmid had a good day against Liffey Celtics (pictured) shooting 30 points, Devon Brookshire had 18 for Celtics.
