Breana Bey begins the season in style in Brunell win

Stetson University graduate Breana Bey started her professional basketball career at the weekend by top-scoring for Super League side Singleton SuperValu Brunell as they opened their season with a 58-47 victory over the Portlaoise Panthers.

We caught up with Bey after the game and asked her how she felt the game went, “I felt like the game was great, for it to be our first game we showed plenty of improvement from our preseason games, and the game is much faster. I’m still trying to adjust to the referees as they’re calling fouls and specially with the shot clock. Other than that the game was great. My team-mates were great, we had good ball movement with everyone sharing the ball and helping each other as a team should.”

Most people know Bey’s story by now, as she came back from being shot 3 years ago when Breana and a friend were walking home to Salem-Lafayette from a corner store when two people in hooded sweatshirts opened fire. She was shot in the foot but bounced back to become a star player in college.

She averaged 11.9 points and 6.7 rebounds in her two seasons with Stetson. She played in all 65 games, making 60 starts, and ranks second all-time in school history with a .557 career field goal percentage.

Her coach at Stetson Lynn Bria said about her former players journey to Ireland, “It couldn't happen to a better person. Breana has worked hard and she deserves it. I know she will represent us very well over there. I think she is going to do an awesome job.  We are just really proud of her."

She’s getting used to the Irish way of life, but obviously moving to a new country has its challenges, “It’s getting better with the team as the days go by, I get along great with them. I'm still trying to learn everyones name (laughs) but they are cool and funny and we all get along pretty well. I'm loving Ireland, there’s so much love here. I see random people and they just smile at you and say hi. I'm also just finding my way around Ireland but other than that this team and Ireland are great and I'm loving every moment of it.”

When asked what the difference is between playing basketball in Ireland compared to playing in the US Bey says, “From playing in America, basketball in Ireland is different. The rules are different, there's only 2 refs in Ireland for basketball and in America there's 3. We have a shot clock in America but here in Ireland they count it down, and that's hard to play with because you have fans, coaches and team-mates yelling at you at the same time the refs are counting down, but the pace of the game is the same.”

She seemed to have no trouble finding her range in the opening game, despite the yelling from her team-mates, as she dropped 21 points.
